How's Your House?

One of my favorite verses is Joshua 24:15b-"But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." I love that because it's like telling the world where you stand! Someday I would like to put this on my wall, if I didn't move so much:) Anyways, I love the challenges that come with raising children. Don't mistake me it is not peaches and cream, but I love when I have taught something to the children and then I ask a question, it gives my heart joy to see their eyes light up because they know the answer! That is so fulfilling to me!
Going back to the verse, read the first part,"And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Wow! You have options of how you can design your life but as for me I will serve the Lord! If that doesn't make a lady wanna sing and shout for joy what will?
In school we take a snack break and I usually read a chapter out of one of the Christian novels I purchased for the kids. Well I did that but I decided to take more than 5 minutes with the kids but chose to take 30 minutes instead. I got out some Bible trivia cards and began quizzing the kids. I was not only amazed at how much they knew but I had FUN with my kids! That's right the word fun was in that last sentence:) I plan to do this everyday because it's just one more way I can choose to make God the head of our home!
So how, if it is God you serve, do you show it to your children? What special things do you do as a family to make God the head of your home?
Also, in designing your rooms how could you make God the focus?
Let me know I'm excited to read your responses:)

  1. My kids ususally wake up to seeing me reading my Bible first thing in the morning. Reading Bible stories is usually one of the first things we do when we start school. One of the most important things I have wanted to teach my kids was that God expects us to show love to others. A few years ago I started looking for ways to do this. Periodically throughout the year we will buy candy bars and tape Bible verses and thank you notes to them and give them to our garbage collectors, UPS guys, mailman, and neighbors. One Valentine's during a deployment we gave out flowers to all the ladies whose husbands were gone. There are just little ways I try to show the kids that we show God's love NOW.

As for redesigning the rooms, the first thing you will see when you walk in my house is my nativity set. It stays out all year. When I am able to get a bigger table (and a bigger house):) I want to have a Bible placed in front turned to the story of His resurrection.
I love your idea of putting a Bible verse on the wall and can imagine doing one for every room.

    Love your blog Kendra!

  2. When the kids were littler, I'd make Bible verse posters on the computer (just 8 x 10, but colorful and fun). Then I'd stick the verses to the bathroom mirror, so they'd see them every day. I'd put up new verses every week or so.

A fun Bible study set of books (two) is FaithFactor OT and NT by Jackie Perseghetti. She brings the stories to life in unique and interesting ways, telling them from different angles than we usually hear, but teaching them well. Includes questions for further study and life application.

  3. I love Scripture on my walls. Well, I found these neat Letters from ltdcommodities that stick to the wall. So....I allowed my 2 oldest to choose a verse that they like. Kiana was struggling with feeling like she was bad so much that God wouldn't want her, so she chose "God is My Savior". Dusti was having bad dreams a lot, so he chose, "I will trust & not fear." I had to reword a little to fit the letters I had available but I love it. Dusti started quoting his verse to Sean when he moved in with him & was scared. :-) Made this Momma very happy to hear that while listening at their door!! In Kiana's school room I made some frames that I can change out the verse periodically. I think I have some pics on my blog of Dusti & Kiana's verses.
